Start with your day, not a service list
Think about when you need help, what you want to do yourself and where you would welcome assistance. “I need help getting ready before work on Tuesdays” is more useful than “I need personal care”. Include communication preferences and anything that makes you feel comfortable with someone in your home.
If you need clinical care, describe the tasks and the times they occur. Ask how nursing and everyday support would work together. A general promise of round-the-clock support does not explain who will deliver each part of your care.
Check the practical fit
- Does the provider cover your suburb and have availability at the times you need?
- What experience does the team have with your particular support needs?
- How are workers matched with you, and can you give feedback on the match?
- What happens when your usual worker is away or a visit is missed?
- Who do you contact if a routine changes or something is not working?
Understand registration and your choices
For NDIA-managed funding, you need registered providers. People with self-managed or plan-managed funding can often choose either registered or unregistered providers, although some supports require registration. Check the current NDIA guidance for your support type.
Registration is one part of the picture. You can also ask how the provider trains staff, shares information with your consent and responds to concerns.
Use the first conversation to compare
Take the same questions to each provider and keep brief notes. Ask for clear information about the service agreement, including changes, cancellations and how to end the arrangement. If something is unclear, ask for an example.
There is no need to make a decision during the first call. Notice whether the person listens to your priorities, explains things clearly and gives you room to ask questions. Those early conversations can tell you a lot about how you will work together.
TAKE THIS WITH YOU
Your provider comparison checklist

- Worker matching and backup arrangements.
- A clear contact person and feedback process.
