Repeated disruptions are a reason to review the arrangement.Tasks and monitoring needs should be clearly set out in the care plan.

Describe what happens during a typical night

A short record can be more useful than saying that nights are difficult. Note when assistance is needed, what the task involves and roughly how long it takes. Include whether the timing is predictable or varies.

For example, you might record help with getting comfortable, personal care or a task already set out in your clinical care plan. Record the support needed without changing any clinical instructions yourself.

Ask about the people and the handover

  • Who is on site, and what are they expected to do overnight?
  • How can I ask for assistance?
  • What training or nursing input is needed for my care?
  • How are important changes handed over to the morning team?
  • What is the agreed response if my needs exceed the arrangement?

Review the arrangement when nights change

A sleepover that is regularly interrupted may no longer match the person’s needs or the worker’s ability to rest. Raise changes with your provider and care team instead of treating increasing assistance as an informal extra.

The NDIS Commission explains the distinction between sleepovers and active overnight support. Pricing and employment arrangements also have specific rules. Ask your provider to explain the proposed arrangement in plain language and how it meets your needs.
